jamiepine · local voice studio · MIT · vs ElevenLabs

Clone your voice. Keep the $22.

ELI5

ElevenLabs rents you a voice: you upload a sample, it lives on their servers, and the bill arrives every month. Voicebox is that same studio as an app on your own computer — clone a voice from a few seconds of audio, pick one of eight speech engines, and nothing you record ever leaves the machine.

Highlights
  • Eight engines, one app

Qwen3-TTS, Qwen CustomVoice and VoiceDesign, LuxTTS, two Chatterbox models, HumeAI TADA and Kokoro — switchable per generation, across 23 languages.

  • It listens as well as it talks

A global hotkey dictates into any text field using Whisper, so it replaces the cloud dictation subscription too.

  • Your agent gets a voice

A built-in MCP server means one voicebox_speak call and Claude Code, Cursor or Cline answers out loud in a voice you cloned.

AdiiX lays out the swap in one post: “ElevenLabs charged $22-$330 a month for what Jamie Pine just gave away under an MIT license,” then walks through cloning a voice from ten seconds of audio and wiring it into Claude Code, Cursor and Cline with one command. 489,000 views. Two numbers in it are already stale — he counted 41.6k stars and seven engines; the repo is at 58k and eight.
Better Stack installs Voicebox and tests the actual claims — clone a voice, dictate, then give Claude Code a voice over MCP — and spends a chapter on the limitations rather than the pitch. 120,982 views, 7:39, and the most useful seven minutes on this repo.

OpenCut-app · video editor · MIT · vs CapCut

A free CapCut, with no watermark.

ELI5

CapCut puts a watermark on your work, locks tools behind $19.99 a month, and its 2025 terms took a perpetual licence to whatever you upload. OpenCut is the editor that appeared days after those terms — multitrack timeline, no watermark, no account, and your footage stays on your own machine.

Highlights
  • Free in a browser tab, today

Open opencut.app and you are editing: multitrack timeline, split, snap, text, transform, and an MP4 export with no watermark and no bill.

  • A Rust core is being built now

The rewrite targets desktop, mobile and browser from one codebase, plus plugins, an editor API and headless batch rendering.

  • An editor your agent can drive

An MCP server is on the roadmap, so a coding agent could operate the timeline the way it operates your terminal.

Mario Nawfal’s Roundtable account: “Someone open-sourced a free CapCut alternative with no watermarks,” crediting multitrack editing, plugins, AI agents and automations at 92K stars. Worth noting on screen that the plugin and agent features are the rewrite’s roadmap, not what you get if you clone it today.
Full Stack walks the repo as it actually stands — the Rust and GPUI core, the plugin architecture, the MCP server, and then a chapter titled “Current Status: Rewrite in Progress” followed by one on the licence and one on what each desktop platform needs. Eight minutes, and it is the video that tells the truth about the thing the stars are counting. (It is sponsored by fal.ai, who also sponsor the repo.)

KlingAIResearch · portrait animation · vs HeyGen

One photo and a clip. The face moves.

ELI5

HeyGen charges $29 a month to turn a photo into a talking avatar. This is the research model that does the same trick for nothing: hand it one still portrait and a short driving video, and it transfers the expression, the blinks and the head turns onto the photo — including onto a photo of your dog.

LicenceMIT code, but the LICENSE adds that InsightFace’s models are “for non-commercial research purposes only” — to use LivePortrait commercially you must “remove and replace InsightFace’s detection models,” and InsightFace ships vendored inside this repo.

Highlights
  • One image plus motion is the whole input

Trained on 69 million frames, with stitching and retargeting controls, and a published 12.8ms per frame on an RTX 4090.

  • Animals mode is real

A separate script animates a cat or dog portrait the same way — tested on Linux and Windows with an NVIDIA GPU.

  • There is a Windows one-click package

Unzip it and double-click run_windows.bat. It is dated August 2024, and the repo’s last commit was June 2026.

Shruti Codes’ roundup of ten repos for talking-head video puts LivePortrait at number five — “bring portraits to life with expressive facial movements and motion references” — alongside SadTalker, Wav2Lip, MuseTalk and the Hallo family. Her link still points at github.com/KwaiVGI/LivePortrait, the old org name, which is a neat illustration of the rename.
Curious Refuge runs the full workflow on camera — make a reference image, record driving footage, push it through LivePortrait, then upres the result — and closes with a chapter on the limitations. 88,870 views and still the clearest demonstration of what this model does, though it drives it through ComfyUI rather than the repo’s own script.

gitroomhq · social scheduling · AGPL-3.0 · vs Buffer

One calendar. Fifteen networks. No bill.

ELI5

Buffer charges per channel per month, so the cost grows every time you add a platform. Postiz is the same calendar — write once, schedule to every network, see what worked — except you run it on your own server and add as many channels as you want for nothing.

Highlights
  • Fifteen-plus networks from one dashboard

Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, Threads, X, Slack, Discord, Mastodon, Bluesky and Dribbble.

  • Nothing is gated

The README says it outright: the self-hosted edition has every feature the paid cloud has, “free forever,” and you pay only for your own infra.

  • Built for agents and automations

A public API plus Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor integrations, an n8n node and a Make.com app.

Nav Toor does the subscription arithmetic out loud — Buffer $6 a channel, Hootsuite $199, Hypefury $29, Sprout Social $249 — then makes the point that matters: the self-hosted version has every feature the paid one does, “no premium tier lockout.” 177,000 views. His star count (28,000) is from an earlier month; it is 37k now.
DB Tech demos Postiz end to end and then installs it with Docker, with twelve minutes on the install alone and a candid section on image sizes and deployment time. He also interviews Nevo, who built it. Forty minutes, 42,790 views — the one to send somebody who is actually going to self-host it.

harry0703 · faceless video · MIT · vs InVideo

Type a topic. Get a finished short.

ELI5

InVideo AI charges about $20 a seat to turn an idea into a short video. This does the whole chain for free on your own machine: it writes the script, works out what footage to look for, pulls the stock clips, records the voiceover, burns in the subtitles, adds music, and renders it vertical or wide.

Highlights
  • The whole pipeline, in batches

One subject in, finished videos out — multiple variants at a time, with task history and settings you can export and reimport.

  • A free voice with no API key

Edge TTS needs no account at all. Azure, Gemini, MiniMax, Kokoro, Chatterbox and Fish Audio are optional upgrades, not requirements.

  • No GPU required

The README is explicit about it — a graphics card only speeds up local transcription and batch work.

Star growth over time for harry0703/MoneyPrinterTurbo
“A Chinese developer built a free tool that automatically creates videos for TikTok, Reels, and YouTube Shorts… over 100,000 GitHub stars.” Sammy’s post is the clearest short description of the pipeline — topic in, script, voiceover, subtitles, visuals, finished video out. His “$4,000+ a month” line is hearsay about other people’s channels; call it that if it goes on screen.
Code With Robby generates a full video from one sentence and — the useful part — sets the whole thing up in Google Colab with free Gemini and Pexels keys, so there is nothing to install and no GPU. 47,298 views. It is the honest answer to “what does free actually require here?”

obsproject · recording & streaming · GPL-2.0 · vs Loom

Loom raised the price. This never had one.

Highlights
  • Properly packaged on all three platforms

Every release ships a Windows installer, Apple-silicon and Intel DMGs, and an Ubuntu .deb. Nothing to compile.

  • It composes, it doesn’t just capture

Scenes and sources, picture-in-picture, filters and green screen, an audio mixer, Studio Mode, and a virtual camera that makes OBS your webcam in Zoom.

  • Thirteen years and still shipping

Started October 2013, 77,000-plus stars, 32.2.2 is the current stable and version 33 is already in release candidate.

Primal Video’s 2026 walkthrough is the one to hand a beginner: the interface, the settings that matter, output and audio, then scenes, sources, screen recording, picture-in-picture and the virtual camera that turns OBS into your Zoom webcam. WyattBlue · automatic cutting · Unlicense · vs Descript

One command cuts out the silence.

ELI5

The first pass on any recording is deleting the dead air, and it is the dullest hour of the week — which is part of what a Descript subscription buys back. This is a single command that does that pass on a file and then hands the edit to whatever editor you already use.

Highlights
  • auto-editor your-video.mp4

That is the whole command. It finds the silence by loudness and cuts it, with margin padding so the result does not feel clipped.

  • It hands the edit to your editor

Export an edit list to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, ShotCut or Kdenlive — or just the clips — and finish where you always do.

  • Real binaries for everything

The latest release ships Linux x86-64, ARM64 and ARMv7, macOS Apple-silicon and Intel, and Windows x64 and ARM64.

Ali Abdlkareem’s six-minute walkthrough is still the most-watched auto-editor tutorial at 63,584 views, and it links straight to github.com/WyattBlue/auto-editor. It is from 2023, so the install step has moved on — the current release ships ready-made binaries for every platform, no Python needed.

remotion-dev · video from code · vs Canva / After Effects

Write the video. Render the MP4.

ELI5

After Effects and Canva make you build each video by hand. Remotion makes video out of React code, so one template plus a spreadsheet becomes a thousand finished MP4s — and because it is code, you can ask a coding agent to write it for you.

LicenceFree for individuals, non-profits and for-profit companies with up to 3 employees; any larger company “is required to obtain a Company License” from remotion.pro (LICENSE.md).

Highlights
  • Three ways in, one source of truth

Build it agentically, interactively with drag and drop, or programmatically — the React code stays the truth and you can switch at any point.

  • Render wherever you want

Local headless Chrome, AWS Lambda, Vercel or in the browser, plus a Player component and an Editor Starter if you want to ship a video tool of your own.

  • Built for volume

Batch rendering on your own infrastructure, plus a library of elements, effects, shapes, transitions, captions and sound effects.

Star growth over time for remotion-dev/remotion
Francesco breaks a video into six small jobs for an agent, and Remotion is the one that does the moving: “it writes every frame as code with Remotion and a motion-design skill.” Then he directs it in plain words — “title is a beat late” — and one line changes. 140,000 views, and the most realistic picture of how a non-coder actually uses this.
John Hartquist builds an entire technical video by talking to Claude Code, with Remotion as the renderer — slides, AI footage, images, voiceover and word-level caption timing, all from a starter template he gives away. 41,369 views, eight minutes, and the video itself is the output.

Hand the grunt code to a model you already pay for.

WHAT IT IS

A skill for Claude Code and Codex CLI that routes bulky, already-decided work — boilerplate, test stubs, the same edit across many files — to GPT through Codex, Gemini or a cheaper Claude subagent, while your main model plans and checks every diff. He also sent skillview, which puts every skill, plugin and MCP server you have installed into one table.

A coding agent that asks instead of guessing.

WHAT IT IS

A small open-source skill that keeps Karpathy’s four coding rules — think before coding, simplicity first, surgical changes, goal-driven execution — and adds a gap check: if a missing fact would change the result and the agent cannot look it up, it asks at most three questions, each with a recommended default. Works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini.

WHAT IT IS
